ISAF Sailing Worlds, Santander - Outteridge and Jensen kick-off racing

Day four of racing at the Santander 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships, Monday, 15 September was supposed to be the biggest sailing day of the regatta thus far with the Men’s and Women’s Skiff – the 49er and 49erFX, as well as the Nacra 17 mixed-gender multihull and the Finn supposed to join the racing action.
Unfortunately the 'wind gods' did not play along as light, teasing winds played havoc across the seven race courses. As a consequence, no racing was completed on day four -- except for two in only one of the two 49er fleets, which included Olympic champions Nathan Outteridge (NSW) and Iain Jensen (NSW).
It was a mixed day for the Australian duo who posted a 16th place in the first and then a fourth in the second race, bringing them into overall sixth position. Given the difficult conditions, Outteridge was happy with the result:
'Today was the first day of qualifying at the ISAF Worlds with very light winds, 4-6 knots, really puffy and tricky with 45 boats in qualifying. We won both the starts but unfortunately never really went the right way on the first upwind leg. We went left first race and the right came in and we clawed back to a high teens result. In the second race we rounded the mark in about 10th and moved up into about fifth or sixth on the finishing line. So pretty happy with the day considering how difficult it was. We’ve got three more races tomorrow to finish off qualifying and the whole goal is to qualify in the gold fleet.'
Santander 2014 is the first Rio 2016 Olympic Sailing Competition qualification regatta with 50% of places awarded based on results in the Spanish city. With 50% of the Olympic 49er fleet spots available in Santander, the first ten countries will qualify the boat class for Rio.
As Outteridge explains: 'Our goal is to be in the top ten countries here to make sure Australia has a spot for the Olympics and then we can actually start planning on how to win the Olympics. And to do that you need to get into the Gold Fleet. We have a strong fleet of five teams from Australia, so if we can’t do it, hopefully one of the other teams can do it.'
While it will be important to qualify Australia, Outteridge and Jensen have goals beyond this:
'We’ve been very successful in the class, ever since around 2008. Our main goal here is to qualify the country, but personally for Goobs and myself, we’ve made every podium this year, twos and threes and fours, came fifth at the Worlds last year. The sail number that we carry represents how you did at the worlds the year before (AUS5) and we’d like to make that number a little bit lower.'
'I think the hard thing for this event is going to be the qualifying. We’ve got 45 boats in each fleet and need narrowing it down to 25 for the gold fleet. If we can get through the first two rounds of qualifying and be in a position to be in the top ten, then we have every chance of winning.'
