ISAF Sailing Worlds, Santander - Burton leads ahead of Medal Race

by Cora Zillich on 18 Sep 2014
2014 ISAF Sailing World Championship, Santander - Day 6 - Tom Burton Beau Outteridge
Tom Burton (NSW) will go into the final Laser Top 10 medal race at the 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships in Santander, Spain on Thursday, 18 September with the narrowest of leads after just defending his overall first place in Wednesday’s racing. Only two points separate Burton from British Nick Thompson in second.

Olympic champions Nathan Outteridge (NSW) and Iain Jensen finished the day with a race win in one of the three races completed today in their 49er ‘yellow fleet’ and finished the 49er qualification series in overall sixth. But it was Australian Sailing Squad’s David Gilmour (WA) and Rhys Mara (NSW) who overtook Outteridge and Jensen in the overall ranking by winning the last race of the day in the ‘blue fleet’ and moved into overall fourth. Both crews will now progress into the top 25 final series - gold fleet racing.

Defending World Champions Mat Belcher and Will Ryan had no results today after their 470M racing was abandoned twice. Qualification series continues for the duo on Thursday.

It was another day of extremes in Santander, Spain with strong winds dominating until the afternoon of day six of the 2014 Sailing World Championships. The wind died down in the afternoon but weather conditions once again were the cause of many race cancellations, schedule changes, race abandonments. In a wind of 20-30 knots in the first half of the day this also included material wreckage and other challenges.

Wednesday’s sailing schedule of 63 races for the day was extremely ambitious as organisers face the prospect of running out of time to conduct enough races to befit a World Championship. On Tuesday 40 were scheduled, but only 23 were completed. On Wednesday only around 20 of the 63 races were completed in the end.

The Laser will be the first medal race of the ISAF Sailing World Championships with qualification or final series across all other classes still ongoing. The 49er and Finn completed their qualification series whilst the 49erFX need to complete two further races and the Men's 470 one to complete theirs. Racing in the Women's 470 resumed with gold fleet competition.

Tom Burton leads the Laser fleet going into Thursday’s double point medal race. It is by the narrowest of leads, which will make for some nail biting racing between Burton and Nick Thompson in second with only two points separating the two after Burton finished today’s only race in seventh and Thompson in third. In short – whoever wins over the other on Thursday, will win the World Championship crown, a nerve wrecking situation to be in as Tom Burton explained:

'Obviously it would have been handy to have one extra point here and there throughout the racing to be at least in a position where I could be behind in the medal race. But it’s close for third and fourth as well, so I think tomorrow will be an exciting race. Definitely it will be pretty nerve wrecking to sail in and I’m sure it will be good to watch as well.'

It was another challenging day for the Laser fleet, which only completed one race and were on the water for over eight hours - much of that in wind over 20 knots.

Western Australian Matt Wearn (WA) took home the day’s race win, which was a bit of comfort for the talented youngster on the Australian Sailing Team, who will turns 19 at the end of the month. It is the end of the tricky regatta for Wearn after he finished gold fleet racing in 28th overall despite an excellent start and finish to his regatta.

'Today was the final day of final series racing for the gold fleet. It was a bit different to the other days, with a more wind', said Matt Wearn after racing. 'There was a lot of waiting around, so we only got one race in. I managed to finish with a 'bullet', so I'm pretty happy with that. All round, the regatta wasn't really what I've been hoping for. I didn't sail as well as I usually do, but I’m happy to finish with a win.'

Ashley Brunning finished the regatta in 17th, Ryan Palk in 18th, Luke Elliot (WA) in 19th.

Placing five Australians in the top twenty of the 147-boat Laser fleet, underlines the strength of the Australian Laser program under coach and Olympic medallist Michael Blackburn.

Wednesday’s racing was on and off across the 49er fleets as the race committee tried to finalise the qualification series in this class in wind conditions which caused widespread material damage in the first half of the day and was then postponed to the afternoon.

Australian Sailing Squad’s David Gilmour (WA) and Rhys Mara (NSW) had the strongest results of the day out of the five Australian 49er crews. After posting a race win as well as a fourth place in the two blue fleet races, they overtook Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen, who are ranked sixth, after a few ups and downs and posting a ninth, 19th and a race win across the three races of their fleet.

It was a challenging day for the skiff classes, including several capsizes and material damages in the strong winds.

'We finally got to our total of five races and thus finished the qualifying series. The day started off pretty fresh, around 30 knots, we had a few swims, but got around to a ninth place. I think only 16 boats finished that first race,' Outteridge recaps the day.

'We then got sent ashore, where we had a two hour break because it was too windy. We then went back out to do two races to finish qualifying. It was still quite windy, we were in a really good spot, but had two capsize in the race, which cost us dearly and we finished the race in 19th. That ended up being our drop.'

'We bounced back really nicely in the third race of the day and won it. It was a position end to qualifying for us, but unfortunately we dropped a lot of points to the leaders.'

'But the important thing is that we are in the gold fleet and that we still have a chance to qualify the nation. We'll see what happens with the weather over the next few days. It will be nice to finally have finals starting tomorrow and have the real racing beginning.'

The 49er fleet is now split into gold, silver and bronze fleets with two Australian crews represented in the top 25 gold fleet and with defending World Champions Peter Burling and Blair Tuke of New Zealand in the lead with a 20 point buffer. Eleven countries are represented in the gold fleet, which means the battle for the top ten Rio 2016 Olympic qualifying spots will continue in the final series.

Will Phillips (VIC) and Jasper Warren (WA) finished the qualification series in 28th, Steve Thomas (WA) and Sam Phillips (VIC) in 43rd and Joel Turner (QLD) and Lewis Brake (QLD) in 45th and will thus continue racing in the silver fleet.

The conditions made it even trickier on the 49erFX course where only one race was completed across the two fleets.

Tess Lloyd (VIC) and Caitlin Elks (WA) are currently the leading Australian crew in 14th, while Parkinson and Hall are 21st and Olivia Price and Eliza Solly are 41st and carry a Black Flag disqualification as their drop.

There is still a long way to go in this class, with 13 races scheduled before the medal race on Sunday.

It was supposed to be the scheduled reserve day, but it ended up being another strenuous day for the 470M fleet after they were sent out twice without getting any racing completed.

With only three races having been sailed across four days in the 74-boat fleet, the defending champions Mat Belcher and Will Ryan find themselves in 11th place despite winning Tuesday’s protest and receiving redress – average points in place of what was a 'did not finish'.

Another race will be needed on Thursday to finish the qualifying series and before the six-race final series can start – possibly to start on Thursday as well.

Once again the pressure will be on the Race Committee to finalise the qualification series, with one more race for yellow and two for blue fleet required before moving to finals racing.

Only Australian Sailing Squads Carrie Smith (WA) and Jaime Ryan (QLD) are in the gold fleet, which started racing on Wednesday and got one race in. After finishing 22nd in that race the duo now sits in overall 25th.

The Finn class was able to complete three races on Wednesday with Australian Sailing Squad’s Jake Lilley (QLD) moving into seventh and Oliver Tweddell (VIC) in ninth. Lilley overcame two broken hiking straps and losing his mast chocks after capsizing whilst in the top three in the first race of the day to post a fifth and fourth in the next two races. Tweddell added a ninth, seventh and 22nd to his race win from yesterday.

No racing was completed in the Nacra17 fleet on Wednesday leaving the race numbers sailed across three days at two for the fleet with Jason Waterhouse (NSW) and Lisa Darmanin (NSW) as well as Euan McNicol (NSW) and Lucinda Whitty (NSW) .

The other fleet with Darren Bundock (NSW) and Nina Curtis (NSW) as well as Pip Pietromonaco (VIC) and James Wierzbowski (VIC) have only been able to get one race in so far underlining the challenge ahead for the race committee.

Racing is scheduled to resume at 11:00 local time (19:00 AEST) on 18 September with all sailors down to compete as well as the first medal race scheduled in the Laser.
