ISAF Sailing World Cup - Strong early morning breeze set to decrease

by Daniel Smith on 4 Apr 2014 At the ISAF Sailing World Cup Mallorca 2014 a strong early morning breeze that peaked at 28 knots is set to decrease throughout the penultimate day of racing.

The wild winds and wicked winds of the day prior continued through the night but from 10:00 local time the westerly breeze started to decrease.

2013 Nacra 17 World Champion Billy Besson (FRA) described the conditions on Thursday as like riding a rodeo bull and fellow World Champion, in the 49er, Blair Tuke summarised the day’s breeze, 'We maybe won’t get the wind part of it but definitely the waves. Right now it’s looking like big waves and 10-12 knots. It’s still forecast for a bit more wind so we’ll have to wait and see what happens.'

Peter Burling and Tuke lead the 49er fleet by 18 points and are happy with that way things are panning out, 'Yesterday was great. Pete and I hadn’t raced in conditions like that before and it was big waves, big winds and a lot of fun. With all the capsizes everywhere we were pretty happy to get away with a one and a five.

'The waves are there and that makes it hard to sail a 49er. We’ve got a good lead so we’ll keep pushing hard.'

Gold fleet racing in the Men’s and Women’s 470, 49er, Laser and Men’s and Women’s RS:X gets going at 11:00 local time.

The Finn and Laser Radial are scheduled to start at 13:00 with the Nacra 17 gold fleet starting half an hour later.

Racing in the 2.4mR will conclude with their final two races at 12:00.
