IFDS Worlds to take place at RNSYS in Halifax

by Kathy Large on 13 Aug 2014
Heiko Kroger (GER) during the Paralympics London 2012 David Staley - IFDS
Sailors from 24 countries will be racing in Halifax harbour all next week for a chance to win a world championship in the 'High Liner Foods IFDS Worlds 2014' at the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Check-in and measurement starts on Friday, Aug. 15th. Opening ceremonies take place on Monday, Aug. 18th at 1800 hrs. at the Squadron. Acclaimed U.S. sailor and commentator Gary Jobson will be representing the International Sailing Federation at the opening ceremonies where he will be presenting an award.

Sailors will start the championship series on Tuesday, Aug. 19th with two races on each of three courses scheduled daily until Saturday, depending on the weather. A championship race is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 24th with the world championship and trophy presentations to follow racing at approximately 1800 hrs.

Racing will take place off McNabb’s Island, Point Pleasant Park and further out the harbour towards Herring Cove. Seventy-seven competitor’s boats and many more support vessels will head out from the Squadron each day in the late morning. A total of 176 athletes and coaches are registered for the event. 47 sailors race the 2.4 mR, a solo keelboat.14 teams of two are entered in the SKUD-18 competition. 16 teams of three sailors are entered in the Sonar competition.

All three reigning world champions are expected to be here in Halifax to defend their titles – Heiko Kroeger (GER) in the 2.4 mR, Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell (GBR) in the SKUD-18 and Bruno Jourdren, Eric Flageul and Nicolas Vimont-Vicary (FRA) in the Sonar.

The International Association for Disabled Sailing (IFDS) is the governing body that sets the competition criteria for disabled sailors around the world. IFDS rules allow for adaptations to level the playing field for competitors, depending on their level of disability. IFDS is an affiliate member of the International Sailing Federation and the International Paralympic Committee.

This World championship is a major undertaking for the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron. Many upgrades have been made to the club’s infrastructure to ensure that all facilities are fully accessible to all competitors. The work has been financed by contributions from club members, corporate sponsors and government partners, leaving a lasting legacy for the sport of disabled sailing in Nova Scotia.

The top ranking sailors in each class will pre-qualify for the Rio Paralympics in 2016.
