Fishing on tap, Aussie wide

by Jarrod Day, FishingBoating-World Editor on 20 May 2013
There is no doubt that the Top End is one of the most picturesque locations you can visit. Jarrod Day
Wow, what a week it has been. I was fortunate last week to head to the Northern Territory and jumped on board Darwin Reef and Wrecks with a few mates for a weeks fishing. While I have fished Darwin annually for the past eight years, doing a live a board trip such has this was awesome to say the least.

We headed some 200 kilometres down the coast by night only to wake in the morning to the most picturesque scenery you could imagine. Bright blue skies, iridescent red cliffs and hot air you could almost chew just about sum’s it up. The fishing, well that was electric with brutal battles, bust-offs and high speed runs that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime.

Our trip was an annual adventure I do each year, inviting anglers from right around the country to join, for the lads I had on board, they got to experience some of the finest barramundi and blue water fishing they could only dream of.

At one stage, the boys were all hooked up. Four anglers with reel howling while tuna made headway in the opposite direction had them giggling like schools girls for the entire afternoon.

Over the next few weeks I will bring to you a few feature articles about the trip, what we did and how we did it, I hope you enjoy.

Around the country the fishing has continued on strong and from all of your feature writers, there are plenty of fishing opportunities for those looking for something to do.

Our writers have been very busy this week but I just wanted to take this opportunity to welcome well respected fishing writer/Photographer Shane Murton to the fishingboating-world team. Shane is a highly respected fishing journalist and will be contributing a monthly feature from South Australia. Shane will be covering all aspect of fishing in SA and will being you plenty of light hearted entertainment along with some very inspirational features on the how, why, when and where to target and catch different species from around SA.

Shane Murton hits the sand in search of Australian salmon along the SA coast. While winter has set in, Shane explains that the winter months are the time to get excited as sport fishing for salmon really hots up. It's that time of year already when big daytime tides and pumping surf combine to offer the perfect playground for big Aussie sambos.

This week I got to experience some mind blowing night time fishing on board Darwin Reef and Wrecks (www.darwinreefnwrecks.com.au) while fishing out of Darwin. It was last Monday night and fishing, well I will let the images tell the story. If you ever want to catch night time jewfish and golden snapper, call the boys from Darwin Reef and Wrecks and jump on board for some line screaming action you’ll never forget.

While Tassie may be known as 'the home of trout', Carl Hyland looks at another very productive fishery, Southern Blue Fin Tuna. Renowned for its trout fishing, Tasmania also has on offer, some of the best game fishing in the world. The Southern Bluefin fishery is recognised as being amongst one of the most sustainable tuna fisheries anywhere and at this time every year, recreational and visiting anglers are breaking records on world class fish.

Gary Brown looks at the necessary requirement when heading off to do some rock fishing. No matter where you are around the country, rock fishing can be dangerous and Gary looks at the necessary requirements for have a safe day out along with the items required for a successful session.

Lee Brake as a different look at things in fishing and goes beneath the skin to show you what can be found in the stomachs of fishes. Doing this can give anglers more knowledge on what baits to use when in search of a particular species. At the cleaning tables or at home when cleaning your catch, it is always good to look into the stomach contents of your catch to give you a better idea of what bait to use the next time your out fishing.

Catch you next week,

Special because there are to be no specials
Special because there are to be no specials There can be no doubt that Audi Hamilton Island Race Week has become what it is today, at least in a volume sense, because of all the cruising boats attending. The brand that has arguably tapped that along the most has been Beneteau. In some years, not too long ago at all, the French brand amounted to almost 50% of the fleet!

Spectacular as it is amazing
Well that pretty much sums up the next round of Audi Hamilton Island Race Week from August 20, 2016. Well that pretty much sums up the next round of Audi Hamilton Island Race Week from August 20, 2016. The spectacular result of a record 252 boats sailing around in the amazing location of the Whitsunday Islands only needs this said – ‘Good Luck’ to all and ‘Well Done’ for making the commitment to get there and be part of it.

Younglings
I wanted to make sure that the efforts of Tom Crockett and Harry Morton got as much attention as I could muster. Right. Straight into it and I am not out to be Yoda. Maybe more like Mel Brooks’ version. Yet with all the goings on, even more so that Rio has now begun, I wanted to make sure that the efforts of Tom Crockett and Harry Morton got as much attention as I could muster.

So cool it makes black look daggy…
Last week it was all about warming up. Now it is very cool, both on the mercury and tech meters. Last week it was all about warming up. Now it is very cool, both on the mercury and tech meters. Yes, the super-cool nights in Sydney were brightened a lot by the gleamingly sunny days, but you’d have to think that the coolest bit of kit going around at the Sydney International Boat Show was the Garmin gear that Jason Browne and his team had on display.
