Festival of Sails - ASBA Sports Boats – Day 2

Everything that Day one was, day two dished up the opposite.
After a delayed start, the Sports Boat fleet set off on their passage race in the outer harbour in steady 10knt breeze. This was short lived with the next weather front arriving about 15 minutes into race, sending gusts of over 25knts across the course. This was when the fun really began.

Kiss (Greg Scherwinski) decided the bar was safer place and headed there before the first mark with all crew safe and sound. This left Vivace (Noel Leigh-Smith) in control at the front of the fleet with the battle for second between Game On (Julian Newton) and Monkey Business (Cam Rae) and this was the order they finished across the line.

On SMS the clear winner today was Circus School (Mark Griffith) sailing his first Sports Boat event in his new Viper 640 and now the proud owner of some 3Oceans Wine Company bubbly. Monkey Business did enough to take second on corrected time in front of Vivace.

That gets the un-important stuff out of the way.
It was a hard fought battle for the Gill 'Stuff Up of the Day' award with many crews going out of their way to achieve nominations. Safe to say that no-one had an incident free day, it was just the degrees that varied.

Standout performers where Barely Legal (Scott Kennedy) who lost a crew member for a short time but recovered to come fifth overall.

The winner though was Troppo (Sam Gaylard) whose crew performed the 'perfect broach' with a double pike, ‘hello boys’ and lost four crew over the side all in one flowing movement. Hope the Gill Dry Bag keeps your gear warm next time you try the move.

The fleet is off to Hogs Breath Cafe tonight where no doubt the 'Talk it up Cup' will be overflowing and the breeze will no doubt have increased to 30+knts.

There is three races planned for day three tomorrow in what is considered the make or break day.
