Cross, Lion, Bird and Cabbage Series Race 1, hosted by Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club, gets underway on Saturday 30th November 2013. Rob and Jan Howard’s Schouten Passage will again line up in NCYC’s fleet of five with an intention of re-capturing the Cross, Lion, Bird and Cabbage Trophy which was last year won by NCYC Commodore Phil Arnall on Anger Management. After winning the series of coastal races two years ago on count back Schouten Passage did not compete in last year’s series with Jan and Rob instead cruising their Beneteau 40.7 to Cairns.

Race 1 of the series has the yachts sailing from Newcastle around Bird Island on the Central Coast and Cabbage Tree Island off Port Stephens before finishing back in Newcastle.

Kym Butler’s Archaumbault 40, One for the Road and She’s the Culprit will be using the 99 miler as a final shake down before competing in this year’s Rolex Sydney to Hobart.

The smallest boat in the fleet is John Streeter’s Bull 9000, Raging Bull, which has recently returned to racing at NCYC. Raging Bull’s crew certainly go into the series with good form prior to their hiatus during which children and work took precedence having scooped much of the NCYC pool of trophies two seasons ago.

'We’re looking forward to being back out on the water and giving the bigger boats some curry on Saturday night' Streeter commented with a cheeky grin.

Race 1 in the series commences at 10am on Saturday morning in what is currently predicted to be a softening Southerly airstream.

52 Super Series – Puerto Portals Week – Quantum Racing top of the pops
Quantum Racing stand on the threshold of their third regatta win of the season after sailing to their fourth win today. The Bay of Palma lived up to its one way traffic reputation for most of the time. The risk-reward equation for those pressing for the pin end launch was high. But significantly both of today’s race winners – Quantum Racing and Bronenosec– favoured the lower risk mid line starts where they had a better chance of coming away from the gun at maximum speed by staying clear of the jousting and jostling

Oman Air quick to master light airs on Day 1 of Extreme Sailing Series
Last year’s wild and gusty winds gave way to light simmering airs but the Oman Sail was quick to master the conditions. The compact River Elbe race course, bordered on all sides by cargo containers and all the handling equipment associated with one of the busiest ports in the world, was expected to be tricky for the GC32 fleet even though the race area had been expanded.
