Chester Race Week - Josenhans’ daily 'news' reports

by Katie Nicoll on 20 Aug 2014
Chester Race Week 2014 Tim Wilkes
They love to see the sailors come and they love to see them go! Now that Chester Race Week is over, all the 300+ sailors have departed, and Chester reverts back to a wonderful, easy-going, summer sailing community... what would the community be without the daily seminars at Chester Race Week by Olympic sailor and general all-around wonderful guy, Andreas Josenhans.

His topic on the last day of racing was all about what to do when the conditions are light and variable, or when you are waiting for wind. So here, listed in no particular order are some of his thoughts and helpful hints:

- Clean the bottom of your boat – throw in the youngest nipper in the water to do this!

- Start where the other boats aren’t

- Stand on the gooseneck to find wind

- Play hot scotch to connect dots of wind

- Sail where there’s wind which is sometimes on the edges of the course

- Sometimes wind propagates or comes in like lily pads

- Take a mental picture of what you see to form patterns and time them. Don’t look at it like a video – more like a time line

- Keep weight low and forward – when you start to hobby horse the wind does not go smoothly over the sails – so keep the weight low to stop this

- Adjust rig settings

- Check the current/tides

- Keep away from other boats
