Australian Schools Team Racing Championship day 2

After day two of the Harcourts Australian Schools Team Racing Championship being sailed on Hobart’s River Derwent, school teams from South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania fill the top six positions on the leader board in somewhat chilly weather.

South Australia’s St Joseph’s College has had ten wins in 12 races over the past two days, but just one win back is Western Australia’s Scotch College and Tasmania’s Friends School Blue team.

Another Tasmanian school, Hutchins has notched up eight wins, as has Immanuel Collage from South Australia, to be fourth and fifth in standings, with scoring based on wins and placings in each race between schools.

Race officials from Sandy Bay Sailing Club and the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania have now completed 144 races, with today’s breeze lighter but more constant.

Four of the five Tasmanian schools teams are in the top ten after two days of competition, with St Virgils/Guilford Young College sixth and Fahan ninth in standings, each scoring seven wins so far. Friends Red team has slipped to 19th with five wins.

'Tomorrow will be a tough day on the water, with lighter winds forecast,' international yachting judge Nick Hutton said after day two’s racing. 'With 144 races completed it means that all 24 teams, each comprising three two-crew dinghies, have now contested 12 races over two days.'

Hutton explained that under the Swiss League system used for team racing, top placed clubs could expect to meet tougher competition on Friday, leading up to the cut-off for the quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals scheduled for Saturday.

'At this stage, we expect the eight top teams to go into the quarter-finals, representing some of the most talented young sailors in the nation,' Hutton added. 'Saturday should produce some brilliant contests.'

The top ten teams after 144 races are:
1. St Josephs (SA) 10 wins
2. Scotch College (WA) nine wins
3. Friends Blue (Tas) nine wins
4. Hutchins (Tas) eight wins
5. Immanuel College (SA) eight wins
6. St Virgils/Guilford Young College (Tas) seven wins
7. Hailesbury College (Vic) seven wins
8. Peninsula School (Vic) seven wins
9. Fahan (Tas) seven wins
10. Mater Maria (NSW) seven wins

At night there was a big drop in wind speed, then it came back soon. I saw on the AIS that Stéphane’s speed went down to seven knots. I started worrying about him, then I met the reason too: there was a massive fog - just as if we were sailing by Ireland. I could see only 50 metres, which means one and a half waves.
