Australian Laser sailor Tom Slingsby wins Hyères

by Rob Kothe on 29 Apr 2006
Gosford sailor Tom Slingsby successfully defended his Hyères Laser title overnight. In the Medal race Slingsby made sure his Croatian rival Mate Arapov stayed behind him, keeping close cover from start to finish. Slingsby finished fourth to keep his title.

He is, no doubt, hoping this is going to be a 'groundhog' European Regatta season, at least result wise. Last year the 21 year old won four European regattas - Hyères, Kiel, Garda and the Holland regatta.

Before the Tornado medal race, Australians' Darren Bundock and Glen Ashby were leading the regatta. However a clash of event commitments meant the dual World Champions had to miss the Medal Race, heading to the Eurocat regatta in Carnac, and therefore incurring the full penalty of 74 points, dropping them to 10th overall.

Matthew Belcher and Nick Behrens finished fifth overall in the Mens 470 fleet. In the 470 Women’s Fremantle sailors Elise Rechichi and Tessa Parkinson had two good results with a fourth and a fifth and finished 15th overall. Royal Queensland’s Lauren Jefferies and Rike Ziegelmayer saved their best race until last with a fifth and finished 24th overall.

In the Laser Radial Class Sandringham sailor Krystal Weir finished eighth and Melanie Dennison 16th. Tom Slingsby won the Laser Class and Brendan Casey was 34th. In the RS:X Mens Corey Plant was 65th.
