Australia Day Jude Timms
This Australia Day (26 January) don’t miss the Australian National Maritime Museum for one of the best value days out in Sydney. To celebrate this special day, entry to the museum’s exhibitions and galleries will be free, with entry to its major attractions at the special price of just $5.

For Australia Day only the museum is offering the Australia Day Experience ticket giving families the opportunity to step on board its Daring class destroyer HMAS Vampire and to spend a day at the museum having an undersea adventure in the Voyage to the Deep adventureland and visiting the Going Places and War at Sea exhibitions. Visitors can also enjoy free facepainting and meet the museum’s inflatable characters and mascot Lucy.

And as we head towards the evening the museum’s waterside areas will remain open until 8pm for families to enjoy live entertainment. Yots Café will be open serving a special Australia Day menu and visitors can have a boogie as Tommy M and the Mastersounds play their lively music between 3.00 – 6.00 pm.

For those who would like to spend the day on the water there’s still the opportunity to join in all the action on Sydney Harbour on board the museum’s magnificent Endeavour replica which will be sailing out to watch the parade and take part in the famous Tall Ships Race. Spaces on the Endeavour Australia Day sail are $280 each and include entertainment, morning tea and picnic lunch. For more information or to book call 9298 3777.

The day will culminate with the Waves of Migration projection exploring the history of migration to Australia and the compelling stories of those who’ve come across the seas.

Launching on Australia Day and running after dark until 8 February the thought-provoking eight-minute animated projection on the museum’s building weaves together Australia’s rich tapestry of migration.

The Australian National Maritime Museum, at Darling Harbour, is a short walk from the city across Pyrmont Bridge. Or catch a Sydney Ferry to Pyrmont Bay or the Light Rail to Pyrmont. All enquiries phone (02) 9298 3777 or visit website.
