An early start to Spring sailing at Middle Harbour Yacht Club

by Alister Copley on 20 Jul 2013
Middle Harbour Yacht Club - an early spring start SW
As the sunny days continue in one of the mildest winters in memory, Middle Harbours Junior Sailing program launches into term three this weekend. With Spring just around the corner it’s a great time to get down to MHYC and take advantage of the smaller class sizes and get the kids enjoying sailing.

While no fun for the skiers among us, the warm weather should see some great times on the water with an early start to the seabreezes that make spring sailing on Sydney Harbour so much fun.

The Tackers Program is on throughout the day on Sundays for younger kids aged 6-12, leaning how to sail in opti’s with Sydneys best team of instructors. The Learn to Sail program for teenagers will be running as well with courses being offered from complete beginner to learning spinnaker and trapeze for the more advanced kids. Learn to Sail Teenagers sessions will start at 1100 when most teenagers are out of bed.

The MHYC Centreboard program continues on with Optimists, International Cadets and 420’s in the fickle winds of Middle Harbour on Sunday afternoons. Optimist and Cadet coaching will be happening in the mornings from 1000 with the infamous Locky Pryor and guest spots from Rob Brewer, prior to the usual afternoons sailing.

On Saturdays its another great term ahead for Adventure Squad. We’ve had lots of great feedback from Kids, Parents, Club Members and the General Public about the new course and it looks like we’ll keep it running, and see what we can make of it. Adventure Squad Logbooks for the kids to record their adventures in are a new feature of the course.

Adventure Squad is open for kids who have graduated from the tackers course or similar and is on learning how to formulate passage plans, and conduct safe navigation. Incorporating many of the Harbours picturesque and fun locations, Adventure Squad is about stepping away from the normal courses and learning skills to get us to new places and home again safely.

Enrolments for all our courses and race entry are available on the MHYC website in the Junior Sailing Section.

However, for now we’ll push on with the incredible semi-foiler Figaro 3, and the new Oceanis 51.1, along with what they represent for the brand as a whole. Twenty-ninth blog from Jon Sanders - He's made it to Bundaberg
Departed City of Noumea for Bundaberg State of Queensland, Australia. I was going to leave on the Saturday but didn't. As it transpired, when asleep, as snug as a bug, - in the protected comfort of Port Moselle Marina - Noumea. Five yachts outside at anchor or on moorings went onto the rocks. Sadly damaged. I think nobody was onboard. Other yachts with crew OK.

Pulling G’s with Beneteau – Pt I
In a car, just the one G will have you straining at your seatbelt. In a car, just the one G will have you straining at your seatbelt. Over nine (+ve) in an aircraft, and without a G-suit, you will be unconscious. So at three G’s, and pulling no punches with them either, we not only enjoyed our opportunity to sit with Gianguido Girotti (G3), we got to learn a lot as well!

Plenty of reef. The fringing reef well out with several well posted passages into the Lagoon. Once inside the lagoon one cannot steer a course direct to Noumea, or one would come to a grinding halt. 'Crunch' (Coral reef and Islets). Never the less a small boat paradise....
