38th NSW Tasar State Championships - Day 2

by Nic Douglass on 5 Apr 2015
The Douglass' were boat of the day on day 2 - www.sportsailingphotography.com Nic Douglass http://www.adventuresofasailorgirl.com
Day two at the Tasar NSW State Championships on Lake Illawarra was a day for the movers and shakers. The east to sou’easterly breeze of eight to fourteen knots made for exceptionally tight and action-packed racing, a good distraction from the otherwise less than ordinary weather.

Race four got away with a pin favour, with early leaders Martin Linsley and Russell Ford on Lass, Hugh and Anna Tait on Serendipity, John and Jesse Dransfield on Galah, and Ben and Cath Walker on Boogie Time rounding out the top four around the first top mark. The top three broke away on the first reach but were chased down on the second by Rob and Nic Douglass on Chukkel. Martin and Russell and Anna and Hugh played with one another right down the final run, but their positions were unchanging leading into the finish, with Rob and Nic hot on their heels.

Race five was rain affected, with Hugh and Anna Tait coming out of the left in pressure to round in first with some separation. Chris Johnson and Johno Liddle had a great first work coming out of the right to round in second. Rob and Nic Douglass rounded in third and managed to sail to leeward of the early leaders to round the win mark in first, and continued to step away from the fleet on the second reach. Their decent lead was handy when their main strop broke a third of the way up the final beat. This resulted in a tacking duel between the Douglass’ and Taits in the top portion of the work, and the entire way down the beat. The Douglass’ held their lead to take the gun ahead of Hugh and Anna with Rick Longbottom and Kristi Ruus-Atkinson taking third.

Race six was another win for Martin Linsley and Russell Ford on Lass, leading from start to finish despite various attacks from defending champions Rob and Nic Douglass making a big comeback from their day one 21 and OCS to move to sixth overall. Martin and Russell hold the regatta lead over Hugh and Anna Tait who finished in third position in race six to continue their consistent scorecard holding them in second place, the only boat in the top five that does not have a significant drop at this stage of the regatta. Glenn and Vanessa Collings were a close fourth in their return to the class after 13 years away.
There is a possibility three more races will be sailed today, and with nine races a second drop will come into effect. All is still to play for in the 38th NSW Tasar State Championships.

A big thanks to Illawarra Yacht Club for being fantastic hosts and to Sport Sailing Photography for coming out yesterday to grab some shots, even in the horrendous rain!
