24th Australian Historic 10ft Skiff Championship - Overall report

by Colin Gillespie on 19 May 2015
Action in the wing mark Race 4 - 24th Australian Historic 10ft Skiff Championship Colin Gillespie
Teralba Amateur Sailing Club on the shores of Cockle Bay, Booragul successfully hosted the 24th Australian Championship very closely contested by a strong fleet, including Brisbane, Sydney and Taree representatives.

Over a good range of south east breezes from strong 20 knts Saturday to gentle five knts on Sunday skiffs were tested with the scratch skiffs’ experiencing capsizes in races on Saturday. Ideal condition on Sunday set the stage for five skiffs with a chance to win the Title.

With series wide open, three skiffs winning races, the final result was to come to the last race where very close racing saw up to six skiffs side by side, big kites up contesting the lead. Gaining a second place in this race Miss Marlene from South Lakes Club sailed by Dale and Tracey Jacobson and John Hodda won the series and the scratch trophy ahead of heat winner defending champion Wrecker and the other very strong Sydney skiff Uncle Fred. Dale’s win brought the Australian Championship Trophy back to the Lake. The Handicap championship series was another close finish with Lake skiff Kismet, skipper Michael Turton, Tim and Hugh Dodds first one point ahead of Taree skiff Jan sailed by Adam cause, Richard and Jeremy Dodds.

Teralba sailing club is to be congratulated on the efficient race management and excellent catering which ensured a successful Regatta.
