2015 SLAM Combined High Schools Championships - Final day

by Rod Carter on 14 Apr 2015
Best performing All Girls team was 420 skipper Sophie McIntosh and crew Emily Summerell in Quickie Red Hot Shotz Sports Photography .
At the SLAM Combined High Schools Championship the final day’s racing lived up to expectations with overnight leader Tom Crockett (Whitebridge High) and John Cooley (Scots College) proving their worthy of leading the event with exciting racing.

Race 5 saw conditions considerably lighter than earlier races in the series. The skiffs and multihulls who had dominated the leaderboard in the series so far, struggled in the lighter 6-8knt breezes. Race 5 saw Flying 11 sailors reveled in the conditions taking out the top three places on corrected time. Tom Steenson (St Pauls) won the race from Henry Larkings (Newington College) closely followed by James Robson (St Pauls). However, all eyes were on series leaders Crockett and Cooley during the race. With the two sailors changing places several times, Cooley narrowly beating Crockett in Race 5 by three seconds.

The final race of the regatta was shaping up as a medal race. The battle for the overall crown came down between Tom Crockett and John Cooley racing their 29ers. A consistent Easterly breeze of 10knts had settled, the pair exchanged the lead numerous times during the final race. At the last bottom mark, Crockett held a 4 boat length lead with a short work to the finish. Crockett decided to sail the right side of the course while Cooley went left. When the pair came back together and met Crockett had lost his advantage. Cooley attempted to lee bow Crockett. With less than a boat length separating them as they approached the finish line, Crockett drove his boat windward on the line for the victory. The ploy proved to be the difference in securing the overall championship.

Overall championship results saw Tom Crockett sailing his 29er win from John Cooley(29er) and third place went to Jerome Watts sailing his 16ft skiff ‘Loose Canon’. First place in the All Girls division went to the 420 Quicky, skippered by Sophie McIntosh of Terrigal High School and her crew Emily Summerell, from Lake Munmorah High School.
