2015 SLAM Combined High Schools Championships – Day 3

Racing finally got underway at the SLAM Combined High Schools Champs after two days of postponements due to strong breezes.

Conditions on day three saw race one get underway in a 12-15 knt SSW. Defending champion Henry Makin (Avondale College) started this regatta where he left off last year with a win in race one sailing on his Moth. Second place went to F11 National Champion Tom Crockett (Whitebridge High) on his 29er, and John Cooley (Scots College) sailing his 29er ‘Frontline’ rounded out the podium.

In race two with the breeze increasing to 18knts, John Cooley reversed the score from race one, narrowly beating Tom Crockett across the line. Both pairs posted an impressive first and second placing. However, in a cruel state of events both crew received score penalties for failure to sign off. This allowed Thomas Young (Alfred Deakin High, ACT) sailing his Contender ‘Stacey’ to take the win. Shaun Connor (St Lukes Grammar) and the ever consistent Will McKenzie (St Johns Nowra) both sailing Hobie 16s finished second and third respectively with only four seconds separating them.

The overall series leader is Will McKenzie but he will need to work hard to maintain his advantage with Henry Makin only one point adrift.

Special thanks to the event sponsors SLAM and DeckHardware for their ongoing support of the regatta, who are both present at the event and have worked with many sailors to get them on the water each race. Racing will continue tomorrow.
