2015 Copa del Rey MAPFRE – Day 2 overall

by Regata Copa del Rey on 6 Aug 2015
Day 2 - 34 Copa del Rey MAPFRE María Muiña www.mariaphotos.com
Today the eight classes of the 34 Copa del Rey MAPFRE competed for the first time. A spectacular fleet of 135 boats filled the bay of Palma and were able to sail the two races scheduled. The provisional leaders after the second day of racing are eight teams from six different nationalities.

The Bay of Palma was back to fulfil its duty with the Copa del Rey MAPFRE. An overcast sky and some showers in the morning didn’t stop the wind to show up when it was needed, and the Race Committee was able to start the two windward/leeward scheduled for each of the eight classes. The debut of the TP52 Super Series and the Singular Kitchen Soto 40 brought together in the water 135 boats, the largest fleet in the history of the race. The wind went from lowest to highest, with intensities between seven and 15 knots.

The provisional overall after the second day has eight teams leading from six different nationalities: American 'Ran V' (Gaastra IRC 0), Japanese 'Mamma Aiuto' (Rías Baixas IRC 1), Italian 'Azzurra' (TP52 Super Series) Portuguese 'Bigamist' (Singular Kitchen Soto 40), German 'Elena Nova' (BMW ORC 1), and Spanish 'L`Immens' (BMW ORC 2), 'Red Eléctrica de España' (Air Europa X-35) and 'Ono Polaroid Tressis' (Herbalife J80).

Gaastra IRC 0
George Sakellaris’ 'Ran V' seems to be unbeatable in the Gaastra IRC 0 class. The North-American Maxi 72 had its second flawless day back to back, and has four victories out of four possible. He has now opened a gap of six points over his nearest rival, Joern Larsen’s Maltese 'L4' (2-4 today). Third in the provisional overall is Stanislav Orlov’s Russian 'Arctic Energy' (3-2).

Rías Baixas IRC 1
Naofumi Kamei’s Japanese TP52 'Mamma Aiuto' defends his lead from yesterday in the class Rías Baixas IRC 1 thanks to a second and third in today’s races. The victories of the day went to William Coates’ American Ker 43 'Otra Vez' (second in the provisional overall, 1-3 today) and Vicente Garcia’s Spanish Swan 80 'Plis Play' (7-1), which is seventh overall burdened by their absence yesterday due to a problem with their boom.

TP52 Super Series
The first day of competition for the TP52 Super Series was wisely used by Alberto Roemmers’ Italian 'Azzurra' to remind his rivals that his recently new world title was no fluke. Both victories in the two races today allowed him to return to the RCNP as first leader of the week, ahead of Andres Soriano’s British 'Alegre' (2-2) and the defending champions Dalton DeVos’ US 'Quantum Racing' (3-3,5).

Singular Kitchen Soto 40
Afonso Domingos’ 'Bigamist' starts the week at the top of the Singular Kitchen Soto 40 class. The Portuguese team won the first race of the championship and was second in the next one, behind Jose Maria Torcida’s 'Noticia IV', who is threatening him just one point behind him in the overall thanks to its good results today (1-3). Third is Juan Eduardo Reid’s Chilean 'Mitsubishi' (2-4).

BMW ORC 1
Double victory for the Spanish teams in the class BMW ORC 1. The first race of the day went to José María Meseguer’s Swan 42 CS 'Pez de Abril' and the next to Rafael Carbonell’s Swan 45 “Rats on Fire”, winner of this category in the last two years. The key in this class is again being regular and today’s overall leader is Christian Plump’s German Swan 45 'Elena Nova' (6-4). After four races, second overall is British 'Magical Mystery Tour' (4-5) and third is German 'Earlybird' (3-16).

BMW ORC 2
An impeccable day for Pedro Campos’ Sinergia 40 'Movistar' who has three consecutive victories. A mistake yesterday’s first race still weighs on the champion of the last two editions, but has now achieved to climb from thirteenth to fifth place. The provisional overall is led by another three Sinergia 40: Alex Laplaza’s 'L`Immens' (4-3), Ignacio Giamonna’s 'Drac' (5-6) and José Coello’s 'Elite Sails' (8- 5), in that order.

Air Europa X-35
It was a magnificent day for local 'Red Eléctrica de España' in the class Air Europa X-35. The boat skippered by Alberto Viejo returned to its club after adding two more victories to its scoreboard, which added to yesterday’s results (4-2) makes them the new leaders of the category. Second is the defending champion, Alessandro Solerio’s Italian 'Lelagain' (2-8), followed by, also Italian, Mirko Bargolini’s 'Spirit of Nerina XO - Readyxsea' (4-3).

Herbalife J80
Daniel de la Pedraja’s 'Ono Polaroid Tressis' also had a perfect day in the class Herbalife J80, defending his position at the top of the leaderboard. Second is Carlos Martinez’s 'Akewuele', who after breaking his mast yesterday received acompensation equivalent to 2.5 points in each race, returning today to score a second and a third to be just five points behind the leader. Behind them is Javier Padron’s 'Marbella Team' (4-6).

Today, Sailor’s Party
The Crew Village in the Real Club Náutico de Palma hosts this evening one of the most awaited events of the Copa del Rey MAPFRE: the Sailor’s Party by Nordés. The Restaurant El Náutico hosted in the morning a new brunch session by Iberostar, and in the afternoon the Singular Kitchen Show. Spanish Horse rider Alvaro Muñoz Escassi, footballer David Navarro and businesswoman Fiona Ferrer visited the Copa del Rey MAPFRE as well today.

Tomorrow the half-way stage
Tomorrow will be the half-way stage of the scheduled races, and teams leading the provisional overall in each class at the end of the day will receive the Enlace Red Eléctrica de España award. The agenda includes more windward/leeward races for all classes except for Gaastra IRC 0, Rías Baixas IRC 1 and TP52 Super Series, which will sail a coastal race. First start of the day is scheduled at 13h00.

On shore, the lively social program will continue tomorrow from early morning at the Crew Village and the Restaurant El Náutico, where in the morning the brunch by Iberostar and in the afternoon the Singular Kitchen Show will be served, this time with a fun cooking course for children.

The 34 Copa del Rey MAPFRE is organized by the Real Club Náutico de Palma and is held until Saturday, August 8th.
