2015-16 Farr 40 Australian Open Series overall

by Jennie Hughes on 8 Nov 2015 Transfusion Skipper Guido Belgiorno-Nettis took back the helm today and didn’t skip a beat leading his crew to another victory at the second regatta of the 2015-16 Farr 40 Australian Open Series sailed over two days on Sydney Harbour.

With a perfect score of four wins from four races today the Skipper could not have been happier. “Once again the scoreboard did not reflect the racing. Kindergarten and Exile scored very close second places in races one and two with just a metre or two in it.” Belgiorno-Nettis thanked Mike Dunstan for putting the team in such a good position going into the final day of racing today and also expressed gratitude to the other Owners allowing a substitute helmsman yesterday.

The course was set from The Sound to Watsons Bay and a 12-18 knot southerly provided near to perfect conditions for racing. Due to a wind shift, PRO Phil Yeomans adjusted the course for races three and four and once again ran a great regatta for the Farr 40 Class.

Rod Jones and the Kindergarten crew maintained their form from yesterday finishing second overall, 13 points behind regatta winner Transfusion. Tactician Steve McConaghy said competition within the fleet is tightening and spoke of their close second place in Race 6. “I thought we had it. We came in on a sou’ easterly to finish and unfortunately Transfusion jibed putting us a metre behind in second place.” The Kindy crew will be focussing on gelling as a team and getting as much time as possible on the water in preparation for the NSW States, Nationals and Worlds.

Edake finished superbly with third overall and top Corinthian Boat and Skipper Jeff Carter was elated. “Bloody hell, what a day! It was a tough day at the office but we are very happy with the result. We sailed a clean race and feel confident knowing we have more room for improvement with boat speed and crew handling going into the Australian National Championships and Rolex Worlds.”

Zen, Exile and Forty all achieved some good placings, however, ended up on the bottom half of the leaderboard. Forty retired from Race 5 with a damaged backstay making it difficult to climb their way back into contention.

The third regatta of the Farr 40 Australian Open Series will take place at Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club on 12 and 13 December 2015.
