2014 U.S. Team Racing Championship - Day 2

by US Sailing on 28 Sep 2014
2014 U.S. Team Racing Championship US Sailing http://www.ussailing.org
2014 U.S. Team Racing Championship - It was a picturesque day on Marblehead Harbor with plenty of sunshine for the second day of the U.S. Team Racing Championship. Once again, a lack of consistent breeze made for a challenging day for the Race Committee, umpires and competitors. Nevertheless, PRO Susie Schneider and her team were able to complete Round Robin One as well as a full round robin for both the Gold and Silver Fleets.

This sets up a final Gold Fleet for tomorrow which will include one round robin where the points for wins are doubled. From there, the two teams with the most points from Round Robin One and the Gold Fleet Round Robin will face off in a best of five races for the title. Tomorrow’s Gold Fleet teams who will compete for the championship are Kirkwood Ticklers, Do Less, Team Shred, Ladies and Gentlemen, Hoodrat S.W.O.F., and RI Pistols.

The U.S. Team Racing Championship remains one of the hottest events in the country for the post-collegiate group of sailors. The premier team racing event in the United States is an invitational event. Interested teams applied by resume. The championship will be raced in three-boat/six-person teams. Each competing team consists of three skippers and three crews.

Teams will be racing the new Zim 15, a double handed, monohull dinghy designed by Steve Clark. The Zim 15 is very maneuverable which will make for some terrific team racing.

Team racing is one of the fastest growing disciplines in sailing. Over 100 races are sailed in just a few days. Races, or flights, are shorter than traditional race courses. Three flights are racing simultaneously with teams swapping out after each race.
