2014 U.S. Adult Sailing Championship - Day 2

The J/22 teams and the race committee patiently waited for breeze on a hot Thursday afternoon for the second day and were rewarded with two races to officially launch the 2014 U.S. Adult Championship, hosted by the Fort Worth Boat Club.

Eagle Mountain Lake greeted the competitors with glassy conditions and patchy breeze. The race committee attempted to start the championship on Wednesday to no avail. They waited it out again on Thursday and at 3:39 pm CDT, Race one finally began in very light breeze. The wind started to fade after the first leeward mark rounding, so the finish line was set up at the end of the third leg. Paul Wilson (Vineyard Haven Yacht Club) won Race one, followed by Bryan Dyer (Forth Worth Boat Club) and Benz Faget (Southern Yacht Club).

After the boat rotation, Race two started but was quickly abandoned due to lack of wind. Race two started after a lengthy postponement and despite limited wind and shifty conditions, four legs were completed. Faget won Race two, followed by Chris Doyle (Youngstown Yacht Club) and Dyer.

Teams are prepared to launch Friday morning at 9:00 am for a 10:00 am CDT start time. The championship concludes this Saturday.

The U.S. Adult Championship honors the traditional club vs. club competition by mixing the best elements of the former Mallory Trophy and Adams Cup events, while recognizing that sailors may be representing a community sailing organization.

A Texas style welcome reception, with a barbeque buffet, took place Wednesday night. Sailors were encouraged to wear their western attire and two-step to live country music. There was also be mechanical bull riding challenge, which served as outstanding entertainment for everyone involved.
