Houston USA sailor Marvin Beckmann sailed to victory in the 2009 Glenfiddich North American Etchells titles in Toronto Canada this week ahead of Canada's Hank Lammens and 1986 and 1987 Etchells World Champion Bruce Burton. Wade Edwards and crew, USA 1221, for the second year in a row won the Corinthian Cup as the top-placing all-amateur crew, taking fourth place overall. Results and more images below.
The conditions varied throughout the series; from light and lumpy, strong westerly breeze, to unpredictable difficult racing conditions on the last day. Unfortunately, there was no racing on the last day.
So the final race on Saturday turned out to be the championship decider and in that race, Beckmann, the North American Etchells Association co-chairman continued his consistent performance. He sailed another solid race finishing fifth across the line, that was his drop and Bekmann, with crew Deking and Lee became the 2009 champions.
Ahead of him was the 2008 Corinthian Cup winner (top ranked amateur crew) Wade Edwards won the fifth and final race, lifting him into fourth place overall and that was enough to make it a successful defence of that coveted title. (He was fifth overall in 2008)
Second in the final race was the Laminator, Hank Lammens, with crew Kneulman and Smithers who secured second overall with that result, as he did in Etchells NA's Annapolis in 2008 and fellow Canadian Michael Gaxin, finish third.
First day leader Bruce Burton and crew Burton and Easley sailed into eleventh place. This was his drop and he held onto third place in the 2009 Championships.
The US fleets took six of the top ten places; however Canada secured second, seventh Bob Stevens, ninth Robbie Kidd and tenth Allan Leibel. The only non North American entrant was Australian (Cronulla Sydney) skipper Steve O'Rourke with Canadian crew Terry Yuill from Halifax and bowman Smider.
Absent from the fleet was US sailor Jud Smith, who had won the last five North American titles, the regatta clashed with another One Design committment for the Marblehead, Mass. sailor, who promises to be back for the 2010 series.
