18 Footers League wraps up the racing season

The 18 Footers League wrapped up the racing season with four time JJ Giltinan Champion Gotta Luv it 7 yesterday - helmed by Scott Babbage. With World Moth champ Josh McKnight filling in on main, and Steve Jarvin doing the bow, the 7 machine and her 'experience heavy crew' quickly settled into her big rig to produce superior boat speed, and with NE course management sorted, ran away with the victory.

Appliances On Line, John Sweeney, Paul Montegue, and Tom Anderson performed well enough to keep the chasers at bay to finish second, with third going the way of Marcus Ashley Jones, Ash Rooklyn, and Geronimo Harrison in the mighty ASKO.

Finishing in ninth place yesterday, the Thurlow Fisher Lawyers crew had a remarkable family sporting occasion 'First', with three generations of Barnabas open boat sailors on board. Trevor has raced with son Trent many times but never raced with Manly Junior sailors and grand children, Zac 11yrs. and Jake Barnabas 9yrs. on a modern 18 foot skiff..... a special record for a special skiff racing family.

Winners declared at Airlie Beach Race Week
To cap off the afternoon, the sun vanished, dark skies replaced it and rain appeared, then earth tremor hit Airlie Beach ABRW started with three unbeatable days of sailing under the sun and then conditions became testing for the remainder of the regatta, with even more dismastings, a boat aground and two crew were taken to hospital after being injured by booms in gusty south-easterly winds.

Saxton and Groves head into the Nacra 17 race refusing to rule out the chance of finishing their Olympics on the podium. Heading into the race, the Brits sit in eighth place overall, with 19 points separating them and Thomas Zajac and Tanja Frank (AUT), currently in bronze medal position.

Rio Olympics – Scheidt in a position to attack for the lead
It's a rest day for the Windsurfers before tomorrow's Medal Races, and a rest day for the Men's and Women's 470 fleets. After seeing the Men's Windsurfer gold and silver medals wrapped up with a day to spare, there will be sailors in the Men's and Women's One Person Dinghies with similar aspirations today.
