Middle Harbour Yacht Club boat The Philosopher’s Club has won the Audi Final Drive Challenge of this year’s ASHR, taking the keys to the major prize of the regatta – a brand new Audi A1.
The Philosopher’s Club won its sailing division over the weekend and is currently leading the Class C fleet in the Audi IRC Australian Championship. The boat is a previous winner of the Championship, for which they won an Audi vehicle in 2008.
Peter Sorensen, owner/skipper of The Philosopher’s Club, accepted the keys to the Audi A1 from Audi Australia’s Corporate Sales Manager Northern Region, Ray Michelson, at the regatta presentation on Monday evening.
'I can’t believe it, it’s just phenomenal, I can’t believe we’re here getting this prize,' said an amazed Sorensen. The Philosopher’s Club crewmember Peter McIntyre was nominated drive for the boat at Monday’s Audi Final Drive Challenge, where all sailing division winners took to the wheel of an Audi RS 5 coupé to test their driving skills.
Each driver completed two laps of the course, aiming for consistency of speed and skills on each lap. The winner was the driver who completed the challenge with the smallest time difference between the two laps and Peter McIntyre was near perfect, with only 0.03 seconds difference between his two lap times.
'Peter’s the best trimmer we have and he’s proved he’s the best driver we have,' said Sorensen.
'Actually, now he’s the best trimmer in the universe!'
