Audi Series Divsion 2 & 3 winners announced

by Event Media on 28 Jan 2007
Rod Jones Archambault 35 Alegria from Mornington in Victoria has been announced the winner of Audi Division 2 at Skandia Geelong Week.

Winning three of seven races was enough for Alegria to take the seven race one drop series sailed at Williamstown and Geelong from Robert Hick’s always up their Hicks 31 footer Toecutter from Melbourne.

Hick’s boat notched up two wins, a second a two thirds amongst his score, handing the event to Jones’ boat by a mere three points.

True North, Andrew Saies, Beneteau 40.7 from South Australia came home third, four points behind little Toecutter, counting two second places as its top scores.

In Division three, two Adams 10s fought it out for the major prize. Grant Botica skippered Executive Decision to a two point win from Max Peters Topgun, which was looking likely to take the series following bullets in the first two races. However, Botica came back punching, winning the next four straight races, while Topgun finished the bridesmaid in all four, and it was game, set, match to Mr Botica.

A perennial top placed Skandia Geelong Week player took third place. Gordon Mather from Sandringham YC has been bringing his boats and crew to the event for 15 to 20 years – he’s lost count! His current boat, a Carter 33 named Revenge, has made seven or eight trips with him to Geelong.

“We’re trying to win all the time,” Mather said this morning. “We love the competition and sailing. It’s a great celebration of sailing in a perfect setting on Corio Bay,” Mather added.

Mather stated: Corio is a great place to race, it offers so many challenges. We’ve had amazing starts all this year. The Club (Royal Geelong Yacht Club) does a great job. Linda Carter in particular has been very helpful – she did all the hard yards, even travelling from Geelong to Williamstown to get all our paperwork to us.”
