ISAF Sailing World Cup: Bahraini sailors use Palma as campaign booster
Thu, 4 Apr 2013

ISAF Sailing World Cup Palma – Princess Sofia Mapfre welcomes Bahraini Laser sailors Abdulrahim Al Sadiq and Abdulla Janahi as they kick start their sailing on the World Cup circuit in their bid for Rio 2016.

The pair, both 25, are using Palma to put themselves up against some of the finest Laser sailors in the world and help prepare for what’s to come over the next few years, 'I’ve come here to help me train for the Asian Games and after I want to go to the Olympic Games,' said Al Sadiq. 'I have to train more and more the 2013 Laser Worlds.'

Bahrain is situated just over 1,000km away from Oman’s Al Musannah Sports City which will host the 2013 Laser World Championship this November and the pair enjoy the conditions Bahrain throws up which should help them come November. Al Sadiq said, 'Bahrain is a good area to sail. It is very hot and we have lots of wind one week and then no wind the next and light wind the following.'

Janahi added, 'In Bahrain we have a national team and there are lots of people that do sailing. The weather is really nice and it is a windy place and as it’s an island it’s always hot and sunny.'

Of the two only Al Sadiq has ISAF Sailing World Cup experience and finished 136th at Semaine Olympique Francaise in 2011 and they’re enjoying the competition in Palma, 'It’s a really good event and the level is really high and we’re looking forward to the next World Cup regattas as well,' said Janahi.

'It’s very good for us to be sailing at a very high level so we know what it’s like. We haven’t sailed at many World Cups but we have a plan for the next four years and hopefully we’ll be around for more and we’ll try our best to qualify for the Olympics.'

If they are to qualify only one of them can go to the Olympic Games but the bond between them is strong, 'We are really good friends out of the sea but when we go to the water we forget that,' added Janahi. 'But we sail for the same country and try to promote Bahrain and take them to Rio 2016.'
