Volvo Ocean Race - Bringing dynamic design to the Alicante stopover

2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race - The SCA Pavilion in Alicante Rick Tomlinson / Team SCA
As you arrive into the Volvo Ocean Race Village in Alicante, Spain, one of the most striking features is the SCA Pavilion. The structure consists of a triangular, two-story structure and is close to 400 square meters in size. The exterior has a strong link to the design of the boat, while the interior allows visitors to explore and learn more about SCA’s customer and consumer brands, history and values.

The pavilion was designed in collaboration with the German live communication company Uniplan, who were briefed to incorporate reference to SCA’s strong focus on sustainability throughout the design. This is characterized by the feeling of openness and transparency that permeates the entire structure. With about 220 m2 of glazed walls, dynamic social environments and the use of sustainable materials, the Pavilion could not have been designed and built in any other way.

Jesper Kjaergaard, Team SCA’s Event Director, who has been working closely with Uniplan, explains: 'The Pavilion design stays true to how SCA, on all fronts, cares about the environment, its employees and business partners as well as its customers and consumers in more than 100 countries.

'We have just under 300 m2 of wooden flooring, all of which comes from the company’s own forests – SCA is northern Europe’s largest private forest owner. The dramatic sail-like roof is over 400m2 and features a ‘mainsail’ that is just under 12m high.

The pavilion, which takes about eight days to construct, will be a main feature in all but two of the Volvo Ocean Race stopover villages during the race.
