Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club Autumn Regatta 2014 - Another glorious day for sailing in Hong Kong’s iconic Victoria Harbour, with its fringe of skyscrapers bathed in bright sunshine against a clear blue sky. The early six knots easterly breeze filled in to 10kts for most of the day and provided consistent racing for all the fleets, once again confounding the Hong Kong Observatory forecast.

The start line was set at Hung Hom, with the courses covering the eastern harbour area and for the most part, the starts were without incident however Race Officer Simon Boyde was forced to AP proceedings by seven minutes while the Star Pisces cruise liner and a barge on tow passed through the start line ahead of the Pandora start.

With the forecast promising a dying breeze throughout the day, Boyde elected to shorten all fleets at dock buoy, which necessitated running a separate finish line for several classes which were rounding the spreader mark. This action allowed a very quick turnaround for the the final race of the regatta which was started without delay.

Only the Etchells earned themselves a general recall, with Mark Thornburrow managing to record an OCS for the restart, along with Dragon 51, which returned but failed to clear the line and restart.

With the breeze holding at 8 to 10kts, all fleets were allowed to complete their full course and with an early finish and no protests to be heard, a lively prizegiving took place on the Kellett Island lawn. Prizes were presented by Andre Cary of Blackwell Rum and the sailors were lubricated with Mumm champagne and Carlsberg beer.
