Rolex Sydney Hobart 2012- Images of KLC Bengal 7 and Ambersail finish

KLC Bengal 7 in Storm Bay - Rolex Sydney Hobart 2012 Crosbie Lorimer http://www.crosbielorimer.com
Crosbie Lorimer joined the Japanese sailing journalist Yoichi Yabe on a boat heading down to The Iron Pot this morning, with the aim of shooting the arrival in the river of the Japanese yacht KLC Bengal 7, skippered by the highly experienced Yoshihiko Murase.

30 knot winds were kicking up a short sharp sea off the Iron Pot at the entrance to the Derwent River as KLC Bengal 7 went boat-for-boat across Storm Bay with another overseas competitor, the Lithuanian crewed Ambersail. KLC Bengal 7 was running hard with a full main and storm jib.

As both boats passed the Iron Pot and cracked sheets to head up the Derwent they fairly smoked up the river, making for some spectacular shots and a very wet chase to keep pace with them.

The Japanese crew were as mystified as any first timer on the Derwent River as to how it was possible to be thrashing through a 30 knot southerly at one moment and sitting becalmed the next.

But that very common meteorological twist on this river was at play today just east of Sandy Point, with the crew left scrambling for a light headsail before realising that there was plenty of breeze only minutes north of them, which carried them to the finish line.

Here are some of Crosbie's images from a fun morning of shooting. (The Seagulls and Gannets seem to accompany every photo on the river at the moment as the squid are here in large numbers and these have attracted huge flocks of birds to dive for them.)

Phuket King’s Cup 2016 – have we used up all the breeze?
Three hours’ sunbathing, Russian swimsuit parades and giant inflatable pink flamingos Yesterday was spectacular but Wednesday was less so: it was an undeniably slow start on the water this morning. If there is atmospheric action going on in the Bay of Bengal, then Phuket is not on the party line. Having rushed breakfast, and having rushed out to the boats, there wasn’t much more rushing to do. At 0900 mark boat Alpha were reporting “less than two knots from 120… 140… 100...
