The new Thai sailing season will kick off this weekend at Cape Panwa when a fleet of over 20 Optimists and Laser will race the Phuket Dinghy Series 2014. The popular race series, under the umbrella of Phuket king’s Cup Regatta, entered its fifth year with full support from PTT Global Chemical who see the potential of Thai youth in sailing sport. The Series will start at Cape Panwa in front of the Sailing Club of the third Naval Command Center on Saturday, November 1 at 11.00 hrs. Three back to back races are expected on Saturday and another three races on Sunday making up six races for the weekend. The next and final series for the year will be held at Kata Beach over the weekend of November 29-30 when a much bigger fleet of Phuket King’s Cup regatta gather for the week long race off Kata Beach.

Now in its fifth year, the Optimist fleet is no longer beginner but intermediate and advanced sailors. Many have done well at national level and continue to develop race after race. Qualified top sailors are expected to race the larger fleet of International Dinghy Class of the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta during the first week of December at Kata when competitors will come all the way from Sattahip, Pattaya and China.
