Sydney Hobart - Mistraal Mayday report of the downed photo aircraft

Shannon Wells, Managing Director, Airlines of Tasmania Pty Ltd, the owners of the aircraft has said

'At around 6:15 pm, we received notification from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority that a light aircraft had been ditched in to the water near Port Arthur.'


'This aircraft was VH-PFT, a single engine Cessna 172, which was conducting aerial photography of the Sydney – Hobart Yacht Race.

'In addition to the pilot, there was one passenger on board.'

'We are working with all relevant authorities and providing as much assistance as we can to the Tasmania Police. We will provide further updates when available.'

'At this time, our thoughts are with the families of the persons on board.'

AMSA report the following – Shortly before 1820hrs AEDT, police were notified of the downing of an aircraft East of Cape Raoul.

An immediate search was begun, with the Tasmania Police Cutter, Van Diemen, attending from Port Arthur. Nine yachts competing in the race were also diverted and two helicopters were placed on the task, as well.

An oil slick was identified and an identifying mark deployed. The aircraft had two POB on board. No one has been found to date. Vessels continue to search and aircraft will be sent back in tomorrow morning.
