Melges 32 Sailing Series - Team Synergy out front after day 1

On day one of the 2013 Audi Melges 32 Sailing Series, Valentin Zavadnikov's Team Synergy with tactician Tommaso Chieffi claimed the overall lead with a smashing 1-3 result for the day.

Two races have been completed in Gaeta, where light wind gave way to very difficult conditions, putting some of the world’s greatest tacticians to the test.

Team Synergy's Chieffi simply outpaced American Deneen Demourkas on Groovederci with Mark Mendleblatt on tactics who is seated second overall, followed by Edoardo Lupi on Torpyone in third with Branko Brcin calling the shots.


Further back in the ranking, the race for points is tight and any outcome is possible. Fourth place finisher Edoardo Pavesio on FRA Martina is tied with Lupi in third point wise. Andrea Pozzi's Bombarda, Vincenzo Onorato's Mascalzone Latino and Japan's Naofumi Kamei on Mamma Aiuto! sit fifth, sixth and seventh respectively with 13 points each.

The 2013 Audi Melges 32 Sailing Series will be back in action tomorrow commencing at noon. The weather forecast for Saturday is encouraging where mild temperatures are expected and the Race Committee will aim to complete three races in keeping with the original schedule. As they set off, the competitors found that the forecast north-westerly was instead an extremely shifty south-easterly Beadsworth, sailing TUR1212 Provezza Dragon with Simon Fry and Ali Tezdiker, had had a disastrous race four and went into the day in fourth place on 31 points.

Tomorrow is the 14th July, French National Day, and Brezellec will be coming out with all guns blazing.

In overall standings, the single discard will not come into play until after tomorrow's fifth race has been completed. The wind continued to fluctuate throughout the day and there was the added bonus of an exceptionally big spring tide turning between races.
