The 2012 Laser Radial Youth World Championships are underway at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron in Manly (Brisbane), Australia with sailors from 19 nations competing.

‘Today was a tough day on water’ explained Principal Race Officer Kevin Wilson. ‘We had lovely sunshine and no breeze and sadly no racing.

‘It was flat water, mirror like. We had one knot, two knots from about 200 degrees and then it went to nothing and then it went to a couple and then it went to around about 045, came in at about four knots in a narrow line down through the course with nothing on the left hand side or the right hand side.

‘The young sailors just played around and jumped on boats and had a good time. They paddled and rocked their boats, talked to the coaches and snoozed.

‘At about three o’clock we pulled the pin and they all disappeared pretty quickly. They picked their tows up and went home.

‘It would have been a good day for fishing. A fishing charter boat came in just behind us with beautiful big snapper, just teasing us as we motored in through the marina entrance.

‘The forecast tomorrow is for probably eight to ten knots and it might get up to 12 if we are lucky. We have three races scheduled for tomorrow and three for the day after.

‘We brought tomorrow's start forward an hour, our warning time is now 12:00 hours instead of 13:00.

‘For the next two days we are going to try and shorten our races. We will run our time limit at the bottom end of our target time and not at the top end (of the target time.)'

Racing continues in the 2012 Laser Radial Youth World Championships until July 4 2012.
