2015 ISAF Youth World Championships - Langkawi bucket list

by Daniel Smith ISAF on 17 Nov 2015

If you're to believe the Lonely Planet synopsis, expect Langkawi to be a tropical paradise with clear waters, pristine beaches, a laid back vibe, an untouched jungle and a haven for duty-free shoppers.

Having been there myself I couldn't agree more with Lonely Planet (who aren't sponsoring me to write this piece, but if by chance someone out there is reading, there are 350 sailors who would love a free copy of a Malaysia guide - plus one for me, of course.)

Whilst my plea to Lonely Planet will more than likely go unnoticed, I thought I would dive in on my chats with the organisers, a short two hour tourist trip on a site visit as well as my friend Wikipedia to give sailors a bit of a bucket list.

So, you're heading to Langkawi this December? First of all, congratulations. Getting to the Youth Worlds is an achievement in itself. Expect lots of fun, great sailing and an event like no other.

But did you know - there is a cheeky lay day (1 January) nestled right in the middle of racing and away from sailing, there's plenty for you to do so here's my top suggestions.

Langkawi Cable Car and Sky Bridge

About 35-40 minutes away from the Youth Worlds venue, Langkawi's Cable Car is an absolute must. Get yourself up Mount Mat Chinchang and enjoy views of Langkawi from the top of the 708-metre peak. It takes 15 minutes or so to reach the top and you'll be rewarded with the best views.

Whilst you're up there, take a stroll along the Langkawi Sky Bridge.

In addition, the attraction is running a selfie and short video contest once you reach the top. It ends on 31 December 2015 so pop up there before that date and get involved.

At the bottom of the peak you've got the standard tourist traps selling Langkawi related merchandise but the real bargain to be had is on drinks - RM1.8 (€0.37, £0.25) for a Pepsi (other drink options are available) is an absolute steal so stock up :).

Dataran Lang (Eagle Square)

The Dataran Lang aka Eagle Square could host the opening and closing ceremonies of the ISAF Youth Worlds (subject to building works) but either way it's worth a visit as you will see the famous eagle on a rock which is the symbol of Langkawi.

Helang - which is shortened to lang - is the Malaysian word for eagle. Kawi, is the name of a rock. Put the meanings together and you get Eagle on a Rock which is perfectly symbolised by the statue at the end of the square.

Eat!

Whilst meals will be provided at the official championship hotel - Dayang Bay - be sure to tuck in to some of the local and regional restaurants around the venue.

Just beyond the hotel there are a few restaurants but alongside the road by the Ayda Hotel you will find Sang Thai Seafood Restaurant. Fresh fish, excellent veggies and an array of spices will be sure to get the taste buds tingling.

Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls

Not been there myself but Wikipedia, Lonely Planet (remember I'm available to receive guides) and Langkawi-info.com strongly recommend the Telaja Tujuh waterfalls.

Allegedly the home of fairies you can splash about in the rockpools at the top or if you're feeling adventurous, climb up to the top with the company of macaques (monkeys) and squirrels.

Hit the beach

Google 'Langkawi' in Google image and you'll see glorious beaches making a day at the beach an absolute must.

Wikipedia comes out on top again with the beaches of Pantai Cenang, Pantai Tengah, Pantai Kok and Tanjung Rhu amongst the most popular suggestions.

Shopping

Langkawi is a duty-free island with plenty of bargains to be had. Just up the road from the Youth Worlds venue you'll find Langkawi Parade Megamall.

One of the largest malls in Langkawi you can get almost anything you've ever dreamed of from fashion, IT and electronics, souvenirs, gifts to beauty, dining and entertainment all under one roof.

Definitely worth a visit if racing is done and dusted and you've got an afternoon spare.

Obviously there are plenty of other options and activities to do in Langkawi. The island is full of hidden treasures and a wide array of activities.

ISAF Youth Worlds

Langkawi, Malaysia is hosting the 45th edition of the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships from 27 December to 3 January 2016. More than 380 sailors from 80 sailing in more than 300 boats across nine disciplines will compete in Malaysia.
