AC news, ISAF Youth Sailing Worlds, Quarter Tonners and more...

by The Sail-World.com Team on 13 Jul 2013 Plenty has been happening on the UK and international sailing scene this week with much more action to look forward to.

In America's Cup-related news, the United States Coast Guard has granted the event the necessary Marine Event Permit, which removes a significant hurdle. Given the terrible events that unfurled on May 9, when Artemis Racing suffered a tragic capsize that cost the life of crewmember Andrew 'Bart' Simpson, some had gone so far as to speculate that the USCG might not grant the permit. Fortunately, those fears are now laid to rest, at least as far as the USCG permit is concerned (other worries still remain-read about those inside!).

At the RORC IRC National Championship there was a tense end to a fascinating encounter for 54 yachts from seven different countries competing as race six provided the final twist.

2013 Sail First ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships, Britain’s sailing stars of the future are all geared up to defend the prestigious Nations Trophy. The event is seen by many as the ‘Youth Olympics’ for sailing and will welcome in excess of 340 of the world’s top Olympic hopefuls from across 61 Nations, with the first race of the regatta on Monday 15 July.

The Royal Southern Yacht Club this weekend is running the third event in its Summer Series regatta line-up. There's already a terrific provisional entry including a number of skippers who have entered the entire Summer series in a bid to be crowned the Club's 2013 'Champion of Champions' for scoring the most consistent successes across the Series.

The Cowes Dinard St Malo Race is also coming up this weekend when over 170 yachts from six different nations will race across the English Channel to the famous walled port city of St Malo in Brittany, France. The Cowes Dinard St Malo Race is the ninth race of the 13 race series for the RORC Season's Points Championship and bar next month's Rolex Fastnet Race, is likely to have the largest entry of the RORC season.

The Coutts Quarter Ton Cup gets underway on Monday 15 July and this fun revival regatta will once again feature some of the most closely fought racing of the season. What the diminutive Quarter Tonners lack in size they more than make up for in character, experience and determination.

And finally while Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week (3rd to 10th August) has an enviable safety record, there are a number of hazards that may be encountered during the event. Rupert Holmes reviews some of the key hazards to avoid while sailing at the event.
