Strong winds expected to hit the Upper North Island over the weekend

A big storm lies ahead for Auckland, this weekend MIAA
Strong winds are predicted for the upper half of the North Island this weekend, with winds of up to 50kts expected in the Waitemata Harbour, rising to 70kts in the afternoon from the south east.



The forecasts are as follows:

For the Manukau and Waitemata Harbours and the Hauraki Gulf:
Today (Friday): Southeast 10 knots, rising to easterly 15 knots tonight. Sea slight. Fine, with high cloud increasing.
Tomorrow: Easterly 20 knots rising to 30 knots gusting 50 knots late morning, then becoming southeast 45 knots gusting 70 knots in the afternoon. Moderate sea becoming rough, and then high in the afternoon. Poor visibility in rain developing in the morning, heavy at times.

For Bream Head to Cape Colville:
Today (Friday): Southeast 15 knots, rising to easterly 20 knots gusting 30 knots tonight. Slight sea becoming moderate tonight. Fine, with high cloud increasing.

Tomorrow: Easterly 25 knots gusting 35 knots rising to 35 knots gusting 55 knots in the morning then to southeast 50 knots gusting 70 knots in the afternoon. Rough sea becoming very rough in the morning and high in the afternoon. Rain developing in the morning, heavy at times.

Outlook: Sunday: Southeast 50 knots, but 35 knots about the Harbours. Outbreaks of rain, heavy at first. Monday: Southerly easing to 30 knots in the morning and to southwest 20 knots in the evening. Showers. Tuesday: Southwest 15 knots dying out. Northeast 15 knots developing. Becoming mainly fine.

Swell forecast to midnight Tuesday: East Coast: Easterly half a metre, rising to northeast 3 metres Saturday and to easterly 4 metres for a time Sunday. Easing to southeast 2.5 metres Monday and 1.5 metres Tuesday. West Coast: Southwest about 1 metre, easing Monday.
