by Event media on 4 May 2009
Thirty-three helms arrived for the 14th running of the Welsh Solo Championship held at Corus Sailing Club on Saturday and Sunday the 2 and 3 May they were greeted to glorious Sunshine on both days with a force 3 Westerly for the Saturday and a force 4 North Westerly on the Sunday.
Michael Hewlins the race officer set a traditional Corus course on the Saturday with 2 beats across the reservoir joining the beats with some exciting reaches and more devilish run which split the fleet but made best use of the water.
On the Saturday the first three races were split among three of the main contenders for the series with Andy Davis from Chase Sailing Club winning the first race Chris Brown sailing for the RYA winning the second race and Ian Maclean from Restronguet Sailing Club winning the third race.
On Sunday with the wind having more North in it meant the race officer Michael Hewlins could set a reverse ‘P’ course with a beat nearly the full ¾ of a mile length of the reservoir for the final two races of the 5 race series.
Andy Davis won the race 4 leading from start to finish with Chris Brown finishing second and David Mitchell from Winsford Flash on his first visit to the club coming in third.
The fifth and last race was won again by Andy Davis and also the Championship but not without a fight from Chris Brown with plenty of cover taking in the shifty conditions, this allowed local sailor Ian Fox to lead for a short time before normal service was resumed Chris Brown coming in second and also second in the Championship.
