Starters in the Male Viking Kayak Challenge Del Morrison
Today was meant to be a lay day for competitors in the IRC Qld State Titles and the Sunshine Coast Ocean Regatta. Instead they were still on the water but in completely different vessels having swapped their monohulls and multis for kayaks. They may have downsized their vessels but their competitiveness was still oversized in the Kayak Challenge sponsored by Viking Kayaks.
It was a perfect day for kayaking with virtually no wind and crystal clear skies. The day started early with drinks in the bar at The Yacht Club followed by a practice paddle where at least one competitor learned how to launch himself back onto the kayak having been caught by the current in the marina.
Male and female crew from Quest, Dream, Jade Rose, Finisterre and members of the local Outriggers Club competed. Local identity, Michael Fortune (aka Bundy Bear) put in a cameo appearance. Unfortunately Michael needed to withdraw from the race after experiencing some floatation issues. Winner of the Male Viking Challenge Race was a member of the crew from Quest and winner of the Female Race was crew from Jade Rose.
A fantastic day was had by competitors and spectators alike. Racing in SCOR is hosted by the Sunshine Coast Yacht club and continues tomorrow and Wednesday.
