The Spindrift 2 crew have changed their sunglasses and shorts for polar fleeces and oilskins. Here we are at the front of the much sought-after low, heading south-east. Spindrift 2 has now been cruising at 31 knots for the last 24 hours, and hopes to maintain that pace until at least Thursday.
The forecast for Wednesday should allow a change of route towards the south while maintaining the same pace. The Roaring Forties are drawing near, and there's no time to lose in reaching the Southern Ocean, where strong winds, huge waves and plummeting temperatures are the order of the day.
Helmsman-trimmer Xavier Revil, who is also in charge of life on board, has begun a full clean-up with some of the crew in preparation for the extreme conditions that lie ahead. Everyone is pitching in to ensure everything is ready before going surfing down the world's most legendary waves.
