2014 Queensland Mid-Winter Open Cup - Overall wrap

by Ryan Spring on 8 Jul 2014
Race 7 Start John Townley
The 2014 Queensland mid-winter cup was held at paradise point sailing club. The hosts put on a superb reception and brought everything except the breeze. Day one showed no intention of any wind and led to perfect conditions to kick start the regatta with some impressive freestyle.

The range of movements and imagination used in this event is growing and quickly becoming the most popular event. The adventure race was next to be decided and the biggest contender on this occasion was the tide, however the winners took a comfortable victory and left the battle for second fiercely contended.

Day two saw a nice light breeze slowly fill the Broadwater and the race officer wasted no time in getting the racing underway. The conditions where light and shifty with some challenging courses and this showed in the mornings results for both the gold and silver fleet. By the afternoon the wind was slightly more consistent and made for some spectacular racing. The last day was forecast for the best wind of the weekend and with four races to squeeze in there was no time to be lost.

Racing was held in close to the club and once again led to very tricky conditions, the battle for first was a two horse race but maybe the most heart-warming story of the regatta was the young sailor Oliver Andrews After finishing 15th in the invitation race Ollie progressed through the fleet and improved every day, the last race of the cup saw him take the win and finish in third overall. A massive well done to all the competitors with some of the trickiest racing of the year, but also some of the best spectator action we’ll ever see.
