2011 Charleston Spring Coed - The Cooper River Cross-Current Goldcup was in all its glory for day two of the Intersectional. We had a stiff easterly that piped in just as competitors took to the boats and it lasted all day. Most races had winds in the mid-teens except for the last one and one set, where it was below 10 knots. We used goldcups at first for fun reaches, but as the ebb started flow, we skewed them so at least one beat was a beat and one run a run. We ran races through the day, doing 7 B and 5 A, to complete the series at 11 in each division.
Sunday’s racing was north of the Yorktown, closer to the bridge, to avoid sailing directly to leeward of an aircraft carrier. This made for a longer rotation and binoculars were needed for coaching, but the racecourse was better.
The racing was close and unique, but as in all racing, getting a clean start (which was pretty tricky in the max ebb) and sailing fast helped. For an early season event the overall boat handling and evenness of the fleet was great. The competitors did a great job taking care of the boats in the trying conditions; there were very few collisions, mark snaggings, upside-down boats, etc. Thank you!
