Last Sunday Sail-World NZ spent the afternoon with the Sydney 18ft skiff fleet as they readied and sailed in the final race of the Australian 18ft skiff championships.
With the JJ Giltinan Trophy for the world championship of the class being contested in less than two weeks, this image gallery might give Sail-World readers an inkling of what happens off the water.
Essentially the fleet is one design, with most of the boats coming from Brett van Munster, and with sails from North (one exception from Ulmer Kolius).
The key decision is which rig to use - which is determined by the weather forecasts, the course, crew weight and strengths and other factors - such as looking at what others are doing.
Rig choice is delayed for as long as can be. But the boats must be upright by 2.00pm.
Then they launch down the one boat wide ramp and racing begins.
