15th Western Circuit Sailing Regatta

15th Western Circuit Sailing Regatta Eric Loh
This year, for two weekends in August, the calm straits of Johor becomes a fierce arena as Racers, Cruisers, Catamarans, Dinghies and even Radio Controlled Boats make their way to the west of Singapore to compete in the 15th SMU-RM Western Circuit Sailing Regatta.

Held on the 4th 5th and 11th of August at the prestigious Raffles Marina, this regatta has expanded over the years and with over 50 entries in total last year, it has truly become one of the largest keelboat regattas in Singapore.

Co-organized by the energetic students from the Singapore Management University (SMU) and the hard working professionals from Raffles Marina (RM), this regatta is the talk of the sailing community. Winds are expected to pick up as the infamous South-West Monsoon rolls in and in the usual Western Circuit fashion, sailors can expect better sailing, fantastic post-race parties and an awesome atmosphere. That’s even before we crack open the beer.

Need more reasons to head down for two weekends of action-packed and adrenaline pumping keelboat racing? Well, the Western Circuit Sailing Regatta has also committed to giving back to the community and has done so this year by naming Sailability Singapore as its beneficiary. As a non-profit organization, Sailabilty aims to use the sport of sailing to enrich the lives of people with various types of disabilities such as the elderly, the financially disadvantaged and physically challenged. Last year, a total of $21,000 was raised for Sailability ensuring that the foundation will be able to continue to share the joys of sailing with the less fortunate.
