49er World Championship Preview

by John Curnow, Sail-World.com on 27 Aug 2017
David Gilmour and Joel Turner 49er class - Kiel Week Kieler Woche / segel-bilder.de
Starting on Monday in Porto, Portugal, are we to see the changing of the guard in the 49er? In the Men's Division, there are plenty of new faces from Australia and New Zealand, as well as Croatia. Gold Medallists from Rio, NZL’s Pete Burling is sailing in the VOR with Brunel, and crewmate Blair Tuke is on board MAPFRE.

Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen (AUS) took Gold at the London Olympics, where Burling and Tuke took Silver, then swapped places for Rio. Outteridge and Jensen are presently on sabbatical, awaiting to see if the stars might align, and whether the next AC is to be held in 2021. If so, then they might sail the Olympic Class, but right now it is all about the young guns of David Gilmour and Joel Turner (AUS), who won Gold at Kieler Woche. Team GBR were the Gold Medallists a month later at the same venue for the European Championships with Dylan Fletcher-Scott and Stuart Bithell, finishing ahead of the Australians by just the one point with fellow Team GBR sailors, James Peters and Fynn Sterritt winning the Bronze.

Equally, the Phillips brothers (Will and Sam from AUS) did well in Aarhus with Silver, ahead of their previously named compatriots who were the Bronze Medallists, which makes Gilmour and Turner the most consistent performers on the 2020 circuit at present. Benjamin Bildstein and David Hussel from AUT won the Gold there.

Sime Fantela, Gold Medallist in the 470 with Igor Marenic at Rio has moved over to the skiff, and so this too provides for even more interest in this exciting class. Equally, crews in the 49FX are keen to start to show dominance, so racing there is to be not only entertaining, but valuable for building the form guide.
