2015 Three Crib Fiasco / Lake Michigan Beneteau Cup - Overall report

by Allison Vallas on 29 Aug 2015 The second Annual Three Crib Fiasco will take place on Saturday August 29, 2015 with a surge of entries over the last 72 hours. The event saw great support in its inaugural edition in 2014 while accomplishing its goal of exposing 22 boats full of sailors that have never sailed in an organized race in a field of over 48 entries.

In its second year, the pressure was on to surpass the first year milestones. As of the noon registration cutoff today, there were 57 boats entered- an unprecedented 18% increase in entries.

When asked what he might attribute the success to - Race Chair Steve Kindra (Owner of Co-Sponsor Skyway Yacht Works) replied, “We have a great product and good support in the sailing community”. “In addition over one-third of the entries came from our Co-Host Karma Yacht Sales and their marketing genius. They have a strong following for the brand on Lake Michigan among both Cruisers and racers and they have come out to support their Beneteau Cup”.

Kindra patterned the concept of the Three Crib Fiasco after the Bay Area’s Three Bridge Fiasco with the singular goal of providing a platform to expose new sailors to the activity of racing their boats in a casual setting. He then partnered with local Beneteau Dealer Karma Yacht Sales (KYS) who brought their event marketing/ promotion experience and background in organizing sailing events. KYS owners Jack Buoscio and Lou Sandoval are hosting the second Annual Lake Michigan Beneteau Cup which brought eighteen Beneteau owners from their cruising and racing fleets to the event to compete for the overall title of Beneteau Cup champion.

“We are looking forward to a great day on the water with the owners discovering the joy of sailing their boat around with a purpose” said KYS Co-Owner Jack Buoscio.

Back to defend their titles of Beneteau Cup Champion are 2014 Cruising Division Champs - Tom Oleszczuk’s “Knotty Kitty” an Oceanis 41 and Racing Division Champion Jarrett Altmin’s First 36.7 “Soulshine”. Overall Three Crib Fiasco Winner William Smith and his J-111 “Wooton” is also back and looking to repeat.

The largest fleets of competitors are the seven boat fleet of Beneteau First 36.7’s and six boat fleet of J-105s both are cornerstone fleets of the local sailing community.
