The restoration of the classic Logan design Waitangi has been completed and the sleek, black beauty of an iconic era in New Zealand sailing was ceremonially re-launched on Sunday, 30 June, 2013.

The four-month project has been carried out at Wayne Olsen’s Horizon Boats Ltd, in Silverdale, project-managed by Waitangi’s skipper, Larry Paul, and retired boat builder Max Carter, of the Classic Yacht Charitable Trust.

The complete refurbishment of Waitangi, made possible by the financial support of the Lion Foundation, has included a new bowsprit and bow strengthening. The hull has been stripped back and re-fibreglassed, and then repainted in Waitangi’s iconic black.

The deck has been completely redone and all bright-work, along with mast and spars, have been stripped back to bare timber and re-coated with a newly-developed application from Altex Coatings Ltd that has high UV and impact resistance.

The cabin sole has been redone, the engine fully serviced and the stern tube and stern gland replaced.

'It has been a major undertaking but Waitangi is now as good as new again,' says skipper Larry Paul. 'The Horizon Yachts team has been outstanding, as has been the big team of volunteers who have taken care of all the more menial chores, such as stripping everything back to bare timber, and varnishing. All continuing to plan, Waitangi is ready to greet the world again'.
