The Adelaide International Regatta and SA Youth Champs were held over a hot long weekend last month, hosted by the Adelaide Sailing Club. Thanks to supporters, Tim at XSP and Emma at The Sailing Shop the Byte CII’s enjoyed a great family competition with Moltas Engström from Sweden winning both the AIR regatta and the SA Youth Champs.
All the races were sailed in light breezes. A surprise to Moltas was one of the 'old guys' who was double his weight managed to catch him downwind and sail faster upwind in the very light breezes, under eight knots.
The old guy, Shorty, pointed out that 'releasing the vang and Cunningham is all important downwind with these rigs in light air. Going upwind it is very important to maintain the correct sheet tension/ vang tension combination, making sure the boom is right over the corner of the boat. Beware of over sheeting in light winds'.
One of the great enjoyments of sailing these boats with the 'non stretch' sail and flexible carbon rig combination is the ability to easily make adjustments, and see very clearly the effects on sail shape.
