The Queensland Water Police will be out in force showcasing their on-water fleet at this month’s Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS) headlined by the impressive $3.75 million Brett T Handran catamaran.
Featuring state-of-the -art technology and counter-terrorism capabilities, the 22 metre Brett T Handran is a force to be reckoned with and has been used for intercepts in illegal fishing and drug couriering as well as search and rescue operations including the 2011 Brisbane floods.
Visitors will have the chance to jump aboard and learn all about the vessel’s capabilities and the roles of the officers who work on board over the four days of Boat Show.
Queensland Water Police Senior Constable David Ashbolt said the Boat Show provided the perfect opportunity to give members of the public an insight into the water police and its fleet.
'We’re looking forward to meeting the visitors and giving them a taste of what life in the water police force is really like,' he said.
'It’s a great opportunity to show people exactly what vessels like the Brett T Handran can do and why they’re so important in keeping our waters safe.'
The Brett T Handran will be accompanied by a Tactical Response Boat and two water police jet skis which will be set up on a walk-around floating pontoon, with the chance for kids to get their photos taken on board.
Senior Constable Ashbolt said the water police would be on hand to speak with visitors interested in joining the Queensland Police Service and provide advice on what is required to gain successful entry.
'Any opportunity we get to promote what the Queensland Police Force is all about and what we do is great,' he said.
'If we find some passionate individuals along the way who have a real interest in being part of our operation then that’s even better.'
