Newport Charter Yacht Show – Just as important as where you’re going on a luxury charter vacation are the captain and crew who take you there, and the NCYS’ Crew Competitions will validate that point this summer at the Newport Yachting Center in downtown Newport, R.I. Throughout the four-day show (June 22-25), attendees will witness the making of five-star hospitality and delicious cuisine aboard participating charter yachts as crewmembers put their skills to the test in a series of culinary challenges.

“Every yacht has a different personality, and this is highly dependent on the captain and crew,” said Winnie DeCoster (Newport, R.I.) of the Captain’s Concierge, which runs the culinary program. “The Crew Competitions allow the highly skilled professionals to showcase their talents, which in turn gives show attendees much more insight into the environment onboard participating yachts.”

DeCoster added that these contests originated at the 2008 Newport Charter Yacht Show, with yacht chefs going whisk-to-whisk in two culinary competitions. Now the ever-evolving program consists of four contests aimed at crewmembers and chefs alike.

On Monday, June 22, crewmembers will be tasked with creating unique and delicious hors d’oeuvres in the Sunset Canapé Challenge. Show attendees will judge the entries based on creativity and taste. The contest is open to crewmembers or chefs onboard yachts 99 feet and under.

On Tuesday, June 23, the Best Charter Yacht Chef Competition invites yacht chefs (on all participating yachts) to put their culinary prowess to the test. Using a mystery basket of ingredients provided by the organizers and abiding by a specific healthy-diet request, competitors will create an entrée. A panel of culinary professionals will determine the winner. To qualify for the contest, participants must be a yacht chef that is cooking onboard their respective yacht for charters during the 2015 summer season.

On Wednesday, June 24, the Tablescaping Challenge tasks crewmembers, working as a team or individually, with producing a beautiful and unique table display utilizing their respective yacht’s linen, china, tableware and decorative items. A panel of design professionals will judge each display. Later that day, show attendees will taste an array of juices and smoothies prepared by a yacht’s crewmember or chef in the Healthy Beverage contest. Each drink will be judged based on taste and nutritional value. Winners in both challenges are determined in two classes: Premier (for crew onboard yachts 99 feet and under) and Grande (for crew onboard yachts 100 feet and over).

The show will have an on-site farmer’s market, where crew can buy provisions such as fresh herbs, produce, seafood, meat and dairy from local purveyors and farms. The stand will be available for participants on Monday, June 22 from 1-5:30 p.m.

To involve even more crewmembers, the show will host additional activities, including the SeaHex Bullseye Challenge and a Pitch and Putt Golf Tournament.
