Boating enthusiasts across North America will gather on May 21 to raise awareness about boating safety, specifically life jackets, during a special event designed to kick-off National Safe Boating Week, May 21-27.
Groups large and small across North America participate in the symbolic simultaneous action
During the second annual 'Read, Set, Inflate,' boaters around the U.S. and Canada will inflate their life jacket to create a world record. In 2010, over 1,000 boating enthusiasts inflated their life jackets.
Life jacket wear is one of the most effective and simple life-saving strategies for safe recreational boating.
Each year, there are hundreds of boating fatalities - many could have been saved with a life jacket. Approximately 84 percent of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets.
That's why the 2011 North American Safe Boating Campaign is continuing to promote the 'Wear It!' theme this boating season. We encourage the use of this phrase among all boating safety advocates, as it is a tested, proven message driving the right behavior by boating enthusiasts. National Safe Boating Week is part of the North American Safe Boating Campaign.
