Warnemuender Woche day 2.
Warnemuende presented itself as a large fan mile at the start of the Warnemuender Woche: 200,000 spectators came to celebrate World Cup goals, Beachhandballers and first sailing champions. After a hot and cheery start on Saturday with the 'Ümgang' and the bath tubes race 'Waschzuberrennen', a constant south wind pleased the 1000 sailors from 21 nations on Sunday.
'The weather and the World Cup were excellent for Warnemuende this weekend. The atmosphere was great and above all peaceful and very joyous', Matthias Fromm, the provisional tourism manager of the Hanseatic City of Rostock and Warnemuende, said utterly pleased.
The Heads of the Racing Committees could start their races on 12 different race tracks on Sunday just as they had planned it. The grand finale happened offshore Markgrafenheide, where the Northern Champion of the Dragon boat class had been determined. 'We are glad, that we were able to hold our ground in the three races', Vincent Hoesch said. Helmsman Thomas Mueller of the Norddeutscher Regattaverein (Hamburg) and Mario Wagner (Rostock) were pleased about their first place and the championship victory. 'This has been a good attunement for the Dragon Grand Prix in Boltenhagen next weekend', the sailor from the Chiemsee rejoiced. The Northern German Championship of the Dragons actually started on Friday, but because of the calm they could only sail races on Sunday. In total, 22 crews were sailing.
The Laser standard had to fight the very strong current in the Laser Europa Cup on Sunday. The first race started at 12:39 p.m., after our false starts. The German top athlete Malte Kamrath of the club Seglerhaus from the Wannsee in Berlin is leading the field of participants. Winning the first race and coming in second in the two following ones, he was able to expel his international competitors Thorbjoern Schierup (DEN) and Douwel Broekens (NED) to second and third place. Another German is leading in the Laser radial boat class: 16-year old Ole Nietiedt from Zielow took the lead in front of his 138 competitors. In the youth class Laser 4.7 15-year old Dimitry Tretyakov from Russia gained the lead in front of Benjamin Vadnai (HUN) and his fellow countryman Victor Pilgunov. The Laser Europa Cup, including 275 Laser sailors from 20 nations, continues until Tuesday, the sixth of July 2010.
The Olympic boat class 470er could take part in the events on the water: Local heroes Thomas Dehler and Johannes Krohn of the Warnemuender Segel Club (WSC) are taking the lead after three races. The Youngsters of the youth boat class, the 420er, had to stay ashore sweating on Saturday and were finally able to hit the water today. Three Australian teams are amongst the 49 duos. They came the longest way to participate in the Warnemuender Woche.
At the start of the International German Championship (IDM) of the boat class Dyas, the favourites Holger Sueße and Frank Bender from Cologne, were able to gain the lead in the field of participants. In total, nine races are planned until Wednesday, the seventh of July 2010. The classes H-Boot and Platu 25 could finally start their very own Warnemuender Woche strating from the marina Hohe Duene.
The big boat sailors could fulfil all their desires on the weekend. Friedrich Hausmann and his Uijuijuij crew were able to get the first place in the ORC I ranking: The team won the Warnemünde Cup as well as the Up & Down series. Rund Bornholm, a long-distance offshore race, is going to start tomorrow with 46 participating ships. The starting time in the ranking lists ORC I/II and III is 1 p.m.
Ulrich Finckh, Head of the Racing Committee, was very pleased with the first weekend: 'The wind came a little slow, but in the end it was all fine. The fantastic conditions on the water will continue,' the chief organizer of the sailors from Bavaria promised.
